How to Update Solana Token Metadata
Introduction
The DEXArea Solana Token Metadata Updater lets you update metadata for existing SPL and Token-2022 tokens on Solana directly from your browser. This tool allows you to modify token names, symbols, images, descriptions, and social links without changing the token’s core functionality.
All actions are handled by your connected wallet and confirmed on-chain. You must have update authority for the token to make changes, and you can optionally revoke various authorities to make your token more secure.
For Token-2022 tokens with transfer fees, this tool can also revoke:
- Transfer Tax Config Authority (transfer-fee config authority)
- Transfer Tax Withdraw Authority (withdraw-withheld authority)
1. What It Does
- Updates token metadata including name, symbol, image, description, and social links
- Modifies existing token information without changing the token’s core functionality
- Requires update authority – you must own or have been delegated the update authority for the token
- Handles the metadata update process end-to-end through your wallet
- For Token-2022 transfer-fee tokens:
- Can revoke Transfer Tax Config Authority
- Can revoke Transfer Tax Withdraw Authority
2. Why Use DEXArea’s Token Metadata Updater

10. Troubleshooting & Advanced Tips
Common Issues
- “No update authority” – You don’t own the update authority for this token.
- “Insufficient SOL” – Add SOL to your wallet for:
- 0.06 SOL platform fee
- Any selected authority revocations (0.05 SOL each)
- Network fees
Advanced Usage
- Batch updates: Update multiple metadata fields in a single transaction.
- Authority management: Plan the order of revoking authorities (for example, finalize fees and withdraw withheld amounts before revoking transfer-tax authorities).
- Devnet testing: Always test metadata updates and revocations on devnet first.
- Backup strategy: Keep a record of your existing metadata JSON and authority state before making changes.
11. FAQ
Can I update metadata if I don’t have update authority?
No. Only the update authority holder (or delegated authority) can modify token metadata.
What happens if I revoke update authority?
The metadata becomes permanently immutable – no further changes can be made.
Can I revoke Token-2022 transfer tax authorities here?
Yes. If your token uses Token-2022 transfer fees and you hold those authorities, you can revoke Transfer Tax Config Authority and Transfer Tax Withdraw Authority from this tool. Each revocation costs 0.05 SOL in addition to the base metadata update fee.
Can I change transfer-fee settings after revoking Transfer Tax Config Authority?
No. After revocation, the current transfer-fee basis points and max fee become permanent.
What happens to withheld fees if I revoke Transfer Tax Withdraw Authority?
Any future withheld fees cannot be withdrawn once this authority is revoked. Make sure you have handled any outstanding withheld amounts before revoking.
Is there a limit on how many times I can update metadata?
No. You can update as many times as you want until update authority is revoked.
Do I need to update all fields?
No. You can update only the fields you want to change; others remain untouched.
What if my transaction fails?
Only network fees are charged. The metadata update doesn’t occur, and no authorities are revoked. The 0.06 SOL platform fee and any 0.05 SOL revocation fees are only charged on successful transactions.
Can I recover any authority after revoking it?
No. All authority revocations (update, mint, freeze, transfer-tax config, transfer-tax withdraw) are permanent.
