Make Token Metadata Immutable Tutorial

The DEXArea Make Solana Token Immutable tool lets you permanently remove the update authority from SPL and Token-2022 tokens on Solana, making their metadata immutable and unchangeable.
All actions are handled by your connected wallet and confirmed on-chain (non‑custodial).

1. What It Does

  • Permanently removes update authority from your token
  • Makes the token’s metadata immutable - no one can change token metadata after this action
  • Requires update authority - you must own or have been delegated the update authority for the token
  • Equivalent to revoking update authority - “make immutable” and “revoke update authority” are the same operation

2. Why Use DEXArea’s Make Immutable Tool

  • Simple interface: No code required - just connect wallet, select token, confirm immutability
  • Universal support: Works with any SPL token or Token-2022 token where you have update authority
  • Flat pricing: 0.05 SOL platform fee (plus network fees)

3. Quick Start

  1. Connect wallet containing the token’s update authority
  2. Select the token you want to make immutable
  3. Confirm and sign the transaction in your wallet
  4. Token becomes immutable - the update authority is permanently revoked

4. What You Need

  • Update authority for the token you want to make immutable
  • SOL in your wallet for platform fee (0.05 SOL) + transaction fees

5. When to Use

  • Security hardening: Remove the ability to change token metadata for better trust
  • Trust building: Show users that your token’s properties cannot be altered
  • Compliance requirements: Meet regulatory requirements for immutable tokens
  • Final step in token setup: Complete your token’s security configuration
  • Creating immutable tokens: Establish permanent, unchangeable token metadata

Required Fields

  • Token Selection: Choose from tokens where you have update authority Dropdown shows tokens in your wallet where you can make immutable.

Confirmation

  • Review implications: The tool will show what will happen after making the token immutable
  • Final confirmation: You must explicitly confirm that you understand this action is irreversible

7. Confirmation Step

After selecting the token:

  1. The tool shows the token details and immutability implications
  2. Your connected wallet prompts you to review & sign
  3. The transaction includes:
    • Update authority revocation (platform fee: 0.05 SOL + network fees)
    • Permanent removal of update authority from the token

8. Results

On success, the result modal shows:

  • Token made immutable successfully with the token details
  • Transaction Hash for verification on explorers
  • Confirmation that the token’s metadata is now permanently unchangeable

You can verify the change by checking the token’s metadata on Solana explorers - the update authority field will show as “None” or be empty.

9. Important Notices / Risks

10. Troubleshooting

Common Issues

  • “No update authority” — You don’t own the update authority for this token
  • “Insufficient SOL” — Add SOL to your wallet for platform fee (0.05 SOL) + transaction fees
  • “Token not found” — Check selected network
  • “Transaction failed” — Check network congestion and try increasing priority fee

11. FAQ

Can I make a token immutable if I don’t own the update authority? No - only the update authority holder can make a token immutable.

What happens to the token’s metadata? It becomes permanent and cannot be changed by anyone after making the token immutable.

Can I make a token mutable again after making it immutable? No - this action is permanent and irreversible.

Does this affect the token’s functionality? No - the token continues to work normally, just without the ability to change metadata.

What if my transaction fails? Only network fees are charged. The immutability doesn’t occur, so update authority remains intact. The 0.05 SOL platform fee is only charged on successful transactions.

Should I make all my tokens immutable? It depends on your use case. Consider whether you need the ability to update metadata for future changes.

Is “make immutable” the same as “revoke update authority”? Yes, they are exactly the same operation - both permanently remove the update authority from a token.

What metadata becomes immutable? All token metadata including name, symbol, URI, and other properties cannot be changed after making the token immutable.
