Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to transfer Solana token authority?

To transfer Solana token authority means changing the wallet address that has control over a specific function of your token. When you transfer Solana token authority, for example the Mint Authority, you give a new address the power to create more tokens. This action is a permanent delegation of control.

Why would I want to transfer Solana token authority?

To transfer Solana token authority is a critical security practice. Common reasons include:

  • Enhanced Security: Moving authority from a "hot" wallet to a more secure "cold" wallet or hardware wallet when you transfer Solana token authority.
  • Decentralization: Transfer Solana token authority to a multi-signature (multisig) wallet or a DAO, so no single person has unilateral power.
  • Delegation: Assigning a specific role, like Update Authority, to a team member responsible for marketing.
Can I Transfer Solana Token Authority on Devnet for testing?

Yes. In Devnet mode you can Transfer Solana Token Authority on Devnet for SPL and Token-2022 tokens and test the workflow safely. Devnet uses its own token set, so the token must exist on Devnet — Mainnet tokens cannot be used.

What types of authorities can be transferred?

You can transfer the three core SPL and Token-2022 token authorities:

  • Mint Authority: The power to create new tokens.
  • Freeze Authority: The power to freeze token accounts, preventing transfers.
  • Update Authority: The power to change the token's metadata (name, symbol, image).

For Token 2022 tokens with the TransferFeeConfig extension, you can also transfer:

  • Transfer Tax Config Authority: The power to change tax settings (fee percentage, max fee).
  • Transfer Tax Withdraw Authority: The power to withdraw withheld fees from token accounts.
What are Transfer Tax Config Authority and Transfer Tax Withdraw Authority?

These two authorities are only available for Token 2022 tokens that use the TransferFeeConfig extension. They are not available for classic SPL tokens.

  • Transfer Tax Config Authority: The wallet that holds this authority can change the token's transfer fee settings (the fee percentage and maximum fee per transaction). This authority controls who can adjust tax rates on Token 2022 tokens with transfer fees.
  • Transfer Tax Withdraw Authority: The wallet that holds this authority can withdraw fees that have been withheld in token accounts during transfers. When a transfer fee is charged, tokens are withheld; this authority can collect and withdraw those withheld fees to a destination wallet.

Both authorities are specific to the Token 2022 program and the TransferFeeConfig extension. If your token does not have transfer fees enabled, these authorities will not appear.

Can I transfer the authority back to myself?

Yes, but only if the new owner (the address you transferred it to) agrees to transfer it back. Once you transfer an authority, you lose all control over it. The new owner must initiate any subsequent transfer.

What happens if an authority has already been revoked?

A revoked authority cannot be transferred because it no longer exists. Revoking an authority is a permanent action that completely removes a specific function from the token. This tool only works for active, existing authorities.

How much does it cost to transfer an authority?

DEXArea charges a platform fee of 0.04 SOL for each authority transfer. You will also be required to pay the standard Solana network transaction fee.

Is this action reversible?

No. The transfer itself is not reversible by you. Once you confirm the transaction, the authority is immediately assigned to the new address. To regain control, the new owner must voluntarily transfer it back to you.
